MITEC Considers Becoming a Membership Organization

MITEC (Marine Industry Training & Education Council) has been a board of industry representatives since its inception. As part of a meeting at IBEX 2011, those board members recommended a by-laws change that dramatically change and increase the structure of the group by opening it up to dues-paying members. This move should go a long way toward creating a central clearinghouse for everyone involved in marine industry training, whether they are working in colleges, secondary schools, private businesses, online, or on the job. Need for Claims Adjustors

The real need is the proper training of making marine surveyors into marine adjusters. That is where the value is and not surveying since any one can be a marine surveyor by just saying they are a marine surveyor.

Last week a man that held himself out as a marine surveyor said to my client that he could do a pre-purchase survey a 2001 35 ft Sea Ray which included sea trial ,haul out and full inventory including testing of electronics for $450.00. The distance to the boat was 45 miles and back 45 plus the boat sea trial had to be done in the ocean which involved a 30 minuet trip out and 30 minuets during sea trial and back. What I expected would be about 10 to 12 hours for inspection and full report with 15 to 20 photos and the oil sample reports at about my price of $85.00 PH or $900.00 to $1,100 plus oil samples 4 x $35.00 and mileage of 90 miles at 35 cents per mile or at total package of 1,300.00 . That is a full pre purchase survey in very hot humid conditions in South Florida. His price is out at about $37.50 per hour and that was the going rate at 1984 to 1986. I think we have enough marine surveyors in that world but have very few qualified people that can handle marine insurance claims as marine adjusters.

In the marine claims world I can easily investigate claims and on average save with being given about 100 to 135 marine claims of all kinds in a year about $4.0 million to $20 million and have done this for the past 25 years. Problem we are getting a lot of people that are inspecting not surveying boats and have no idea what to look for from past insurance claims that kill people or sink or burn boats. Who looks in to stolen boats or boats that catch fire. I use to recover 5 to 10 stolen boats a year but the insurance companies do not have any one that looks into fraud properly so they pay the dishonest claims. Many insurance inside claims managers are not going to pay a marine surveyor to inspect or look for a stolen boat and have an insured evaluated if that may be involve with drug smuggling or transporting aliens or just insurance fraud. To make money it requires this kind of experience and talent and is worth about $100 to $150 per hour and is where the money is and not just looking at boats plus many surveyors do not want to pay $200 to be told what to look for based on what some standard book says since they need to see a burned boat and the name of the boat manufacture and why it burned with photos on fire and that he is told on how to in place of putting a recall notice out about100 other boats that burned or have the potential of also burning. He has conducted C&O investigations and run spectra lab test and or run finger print tests to find who did what and when.

Look it is real easy to tell some one you will teach them but if the teacher does not have at least 20 years past experience with 2,000 past claim cases in files it is just a soft promo to sell some class or computer soft ware to make money and they will see that and say why do I want to see the same things in a standards book that is boring and unproductive to producing income.

I felt I needed to jump in and make a comment here and best of luck.

We send our condolences to ProBoat E-Training instructor Pat Kearns, who recently lost her mother:

Willamina “Billie” Byrne, 86 years old, of Stevensville, MD died at the Genesis/Corsica Hills Nursing Center, Centreville, MD on Tuesday, March 20, 2007. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late William F. and Louise Laswell Krull. She is predeceased by her sister, Mary Louise Krull Noonan. She was a member of the 1938 graduating class of Presentation Academy in Louisville, Kentucky.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, John Byrne, also a resident at the Corsica Hills Center. They were married in Louisville and, following John’s WWII service in the Army Signal Corps, the couple settled in Newark, New Jersey, later moving to raise a family in the New Jersey shore town of Belmar.

For nearly 30 years, Billie was the first voice to callers and first smile to visitors to WJLK, the radio station that served as the “Voice of the Asbury Park Press” in Asbury Park, New Jersey. In 1999, the couple moved to Stevensville, Maryland, to be near family there. Billie was a devoted and active member of St. Rose Roman Catholic Church in Belmar for 40 years and, most recently, a parishioner at St. Christopher’s Church in Chester, Maryland.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Patricia Kearns of Naples, Florida and her son, John Byrne of Centreville, Maryland; her grandson, Michael Kearns of Cleveland, Ohio; granddaughter, Jennifer Ruppert of Chester, Maryland and four great grandchildren.

Can Surveying be Taught over the Internet?

Having just entered the 40th year of practice as a marine surveyor I can readily assure you that this profession cannot be taught over the Internet. Steve's course is a very good course and I would say that everyone could glean some good out of it.

In so far as Pat's course is concerned, I would say that how a report is written is the purview of the surveyor. One of the biggest complaints I hear from underwriters of late is that all survey reports look alike. They prefer the individually produced reports over the cookie cutter reports. That gives them a chance to observe who knows their stuff and who doesn't.

It seems that everything in our lives is turning into cookie cutter mentality with no individualism. It is that very individual part of the job that success is hinged upon. If a surveyor cannot write a report clearly, perhaps he/she should not be a surveyor. Aside from boat knowledge, the most important aspect of our job is clearly delineating our findings in the written word. This is something that is learned in a lifetime, not in a few weeks.

ProBoatE-Training.com launches new education program

Tuesday August 8, 2006

BROOKLIN, Maine - ProBoatE-Training.com, formerly EMarineTraining.com and owned by Professional BoatBuilder magazine, is launching its new marine-industry education program, the magazine reported in a statement today.

Registration is now open for ProBoatE-Training.com's five online fall courses for boat builders, designers, repairers, surveyors, and yard/marina operators, which begin this month.

The five courses being offered are AutoCAD for Marine Designers, Basic Composite Repair, Propeller Selection, Business of Marine Surveying, and Writing Marine Survey Reports.

Prospective e-learning students can visit ProBoatE-Training.com online to review the course descriptions, expert instructors, and schedule.

The first course from ProBoatE-Training.com, AutoCAD for Marine Designers, is currently underway, led by marine engineer Cliff Estes. In the four additional upcoming courses - on composites, propeller selection, and marine survey - students will have access to their online course materials starting September 1. Online chats will begin the week of September 10. Students wishing to register after a course's first chat takes place will need permission from the instructor.

Instructors Charlie Teran, Chris Barry, Patricia Kearns, and Steve Knox are all past speakers at the International BoatBuilders' Exhibition & Conference (IBEX) and former instructors for EMarineTraining.com. Marine AutoCAD course to begin

If you are interested in learning to design boats using AutoCAD, you may want to take part in our Marine AutoCAD course. The course assumes you already have basic skills in both boat design and in AutoCAD, so be sure to read the full description. Also, although the course opens to students on July 31, the first live chat won't take place until August 9. After that, chats will be each Wednesday at noon (Pacific Time) for six weeks.
